The Company
Alcoa is a global industry leader in the production of bauxite, alumina and aluminium, with one of the largest bauxite mining portfolios worldwide comprising of seven active bauxite mines across diverse geographies. Specifically, in their bauxite business, they aim to be leaders in the environmentally sound and sustainable practices in the mining industry.
  
An opportunity currently exists for an experienced Environmental Manager at the Huntly and Willowdale mines in Western Australia. Both mines are located in the Darling Range near Dwellingup, approximately 100 kilometres south of Perth. Huntly is the world’s second largest bauxite mine, supplying ore to Alcoa’s Pinjarra and Kwinana alumina refineries.
  
The Role
Reporting into the Huntly Mine Manager, the Environmental Manager will champion, implement and share best practice across the WA Bauxite mining operations. As a key member of the Huntly Leadership Team, you will play an integral part in environmental management and performance across both mines, with specific focus on water stewardship, mine rehabilitation and biodiversity conservation in the northern Jarrah forest. 
  
Additional accountabilities include:
  • Providing leadership and support on environmental compliance and risk management, including government environmental approvals and permitting for sustaining operations and projects.
  • Leading and managing delivery and performance of the WA bauxite environment team.
  • Actively participating in government liaison and keeping well informed on environmental and political agendas of government, political parties, NGOs and the broader community regarding mining operations.
  • Providing guidance on research direction, planning and procedures for mine rehabilitation and biodiversity conservation within the northern Jarrah forest.
This opportunity is based at Huntly but will require regular travel to Willowdale.
  
The Individual
The organisation requires a senior individual who can demonstrate the ability to influence, communicate and lead effectively across the organisation with a variety of stakeholders. You will be commercially astute with a proven track record in environmental management within the mining industry. Coupled with a degree in Environmental Science (or similar) you will have significant experience in mining rehabilitation, environmental legislation and safety management.
